Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Department of Physiology and thank you for visiting our website. We have tried to organize this site so that your virtual visit to the department will be efficient, informative and enjoyable.

As you move through the subsequent pages, I believe you will discover that our department is an exciting place to work and learn. The research activities are quite varied and involve cell and molecular approaches as well as integrated approaches examining organ system functions and organ system interactions. With respect to content areas, cardiovascular, neural, endocrine, respiratory and cell physiology are all represented by well funded laboratories. In addition, we are engaged in collaborative efforts with several strong clinical departments and the research division of the nearby Henry Ford Health System. Our longstanding association with faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has resulted in the addition of a formal Reproductive Science Concentration to our Ph.D. program which is attractive to students interested in pursuing the M.D./Ph.D. or the Ph.D. degree or to residents/fellows interested in expanding their research training and earning a Ph.D. degree in the areas of reproductive endocrinology, early embryonic development, stem cell biology, systems biology and related clinical areas. Our collaborations with clinical and basic science faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine and at the Henry Ford Hospital offer opportunities for research and pre- and postdoctoral training in renal physiology and hypertension. Finally, the integration of many of our faculty into the recently established Cardiovascular Research Institute of the School of Medicine will allow for expansion of research and training in many laboratories investigating cardiovascular diseases.

If you are a student interested in pursuing an advanced degree, please visit the sections describing our graduate program. You will find thorough descriptions of our course offerings, assistantship support, and admissions and graduation requirements. Our application for admission is online and we welcome your inquiries.

Again, thank you for visiting our department. Perhaps, your next visit can be in person.

Interim Chairman
