          Ivory Dean

A Wayne State University School of Medicine student has been selected to receive a Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award from the American Association for Cancer Research. Ivory Dean, a former IMSD student and a third-year doctoral candidate in the Cancer Biology program, will receive the award – one of 50 – at the AACR’s 102nd annual meeting in early April, 2011. The award, according to the AACR, is intended to enhance the education and training of minority researchers and increase the visibility and recognition of minorities involved in cancer research.“I am honored to be the recipient of the AACR Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award,” said Dean, a native of Hattiesburg, Miss. “This award will allow me to travel to the AACR annual meeting, which will be my first time attending an AACR annual meeting.” Dean, who completed her undergraduate studies in chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana, is mentored by Shijie Sheng, Ph.D., professor of Pathology and co-leader of the Proteases and Cancer Program of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. She will present her poster, “Maspin induces MET in prostate cancer cells cultured in 3D-collagen,” April 5 at the association’s meeting in Orlando, Fla.

She plans to pursue a research and teaching career, with a focus on cancer research.
