Biography

Dr. Mateika is a respiratory physiologist interested in the integrative control of breathing in both humans and animals during wakefulness and sleep. Dr. Mateika’s research interest is focused on the impact that exposure to episodic hypoxia has on central and peripheral chemoreflex function, and chest wall and upper airway muscle activity. He has used both human and animal models to investigate this interest. The long-term goal of his research is to determine the potential impact that episodic hypoxia may have on breathing stability in individuals with sleep apnea.  Dr. Mateika research is presently funded by the NIH.
