Professor, Endocrinology Division Chief at Wayne Health

Narrative Bio

Prior to joining Wayne State, I was a faculty member at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Missouri, Columbia, and the University of Michigan. Previously, I was appointed by the White House to serve as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) and Chief Medical Officer for TRICARE. On a personal note, at age 65, I am the oldest person still playing collegiate ice hockey.

My primary focus is the training and preparation of endocrinology fellows as clinician scientists for positions in academic medicine. I have federal research grants to study human performance in extreme environments, the cardiovascular consequences of traumatic brain injury, and the actions of the hyperpolarization gated, cyclic nucleotide activated “funny” channels. My clinical interests include disorders of androgen metabolism, adrenal causes of hypertension, and central pathways in obesity in metabolic syndrome. Interested fellows are welcome to participate in any of our ongoing research projects. We will give you the tools and mentor you in your path to become outstanding clinician scientists.
